- Introduction
This process applies to the RT1003 only.
There are two stages to this upgrade, one for the RT firmware and one for the GPS card firmware. This process should take up to 30 minutes.
The update process can only be updated using Ethernet. You will have received the following files:
- .tx1
- .tx2
- xbns
- xDEV
NOTE: If the software has been sent in a zip file, the extension might have been changed to .piz so that it is not rejected by email security systems. If so, change it to .zip, then unzip the file.
- Connect Ethernet
The RJ45 Ethernet connector on RT1003 can be plugged in to a network hub. To connect it directly to a laptop a crossover must be used. The RT1003 is supplied with a suitable cable for connection to a laptop computer. The IP address of the laptop must be in the same subnet as the RT, in other words the IP address should begin 195.0.0. (by default) and end with a number lower than 255 that is different from the RT.
- Viewing Raw Data on RT
Use Windows Explorer to connect to the RT1003.
In the address box ftp to the IP address of the RT1003, for example ftp://195.0.0.m where m is the last two digits of the serial number, as shown in the screenshot below. Please note, if you have changed the IP address of your unit, you should use the address you set instead.
Explorer will list all the raw data files that are stored in the RT. If you are able to view this then skip to step 4.
If Internet Explorer automatically opens when you try to connect over FTP, open the Internet Options, Advanced tab and tick the setting to enable FTP folder view outside of Internet Explorer (see below).
- Back up old files
Before updating the firmware, back-up any RD files you may need.
Do not delete the files that start with mobile. These are your configuration files and should only be changed using the NAVconfig. (The file mobile.rd can be deleted, but the system will put it back).
- Applying the firmware
You should first check that you have no commands in the advance commands section of the configuration relating to the serial port as seen in the screen shot below.
The files must be unzipped before they are applied to the unit. The firmware must be transferred as binary data, with the file name unchanged.
- First apply both xbns and xDEV at the same time, drag-and-drop them in the Explorer window of the unit.
- Wait 10 seconds, turn off the RT and turn it back on again
- Check firmware version
Run NAVdisplay and connect to the RT as normal. In NAVconnect the firmware id is displayed, as shown below.
This should be 190324x1. The name of the zipped file containing the firmware will tell you the version (or Development ID) of the rtbns/xbns firmware. Once this is applied you may not be able to see or use satellites until you update the GPS card firmware.
7. Applying the GPS card firmware (primary)
The files must be unzipped before they are applied to the unit. The firmware must be transferred as binary data, with the file name unchanged. Do not connect GPS antennas during this process.
- To copy the .tx1 file, drag-and-drop it in the Explorer window of the unit.
- Wait 10 seconds, turn off the RT and turn it back on again
- Check the firmware has been taken.
Uploading this firmware will take up to 10 minutes. During this time the unit will be visible in NAVdisplay but no satellites will be tracked. When the update is complete the unit should start tracking satellites again. After this, check the FTP for the unit and make sure the .tx1 file has disappeared. If the file is still there power cycle to try the process again.
8. Applying the GPS card firmware (secondary)
For the secondary card, repeat step 7 but with the .tx2 file.
Now you can connect the antennas, run NAVdisplay and connect to the RT as normal. You should be able to see satellites and be in a position mode.
If both the .tx1 and the .tx2 files aren’t gone then power cycle the unit, the check again after 10 minutes.
The process should now be complete. You will need to download the new NAVsuite 2.5 or later to be able to post process the data from the unit after the date 6th April 2019. This can be downloaded from our support website nearer to the date:
